According to a new study, there are three themes connected to efforts that can successfully reduce burnout:
- Work culture that prioritizes person-centered care over productivity and performance metrics.
- Management skills and practices to overcome bureaucracy and enable more workplace flexibility and individualized engagement.
- Opportunities for worker professional development and self-care.
“When policies get in the way of providing good care, it undermines morale and engagement,” said the authors.
It is essential to prioritize efforts to reduce burnout and stress, particularly in healthcare settings. One recent survey showed that over half (56%) of health professionals say they are experiencing burnout. The authors of that survey concluded that COVID-19 has exacerbated healthcare professional burnout but there is insufficient institutional support to reduce it.
