Despite efforts to strengthen connections and fill the gaps, health information exchanges between skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) and hospitals are underutilized. According to a new study, SNFs used these exchanges only about 46% of the time when they were available; and SNFs only accessed records for 29% of patients in the three days following hospital discharge. The researchers suggested that lack of workflow integration and limited staff with approved access to information as possible reasons for the underutilization of health information exchange.
