Survey: Healthcare Organizations Benefit from Women Execs, But Don’t Do Enough to Advance Them

By Joanne Kaldy / May 29, 2019

Health execs say gender parity in leadership would increase profits, reduce turnover. According to a new Korn Ferry survey of CEOs, CHROs, and other C-suite healthcare executives, women are taking on more leadership roles; but more effort is needed to get women through the glass ceiling. While 80% of healthcare workers are women, they hold only 20% of key leadership positions industrywide; and only 4% of healthcare companies have a female CEO.  While nearly two-thirds (63%) of respondents said that there is more opportunity today than five years ago for women to advance to senior positions, 55% say that women sometimes get passed over for promotions due to their gender. … [Read more...] about Survey: Healthcare Organizations Benefit from Women Execs, But Don’t Do Enough to Advance Them

Report: Employers Need to Rethink Strategies to Attract Millennials

By Joanne Kaldy / May 22, 2019

You need to understand younger workers’ worldview to attract, engage them. Millennials aren’t especially optimistic about the future, and they’re not completely satisfied with their lives and the world around them, according to the 2019 Deloitte Global Millennial Survey. Nearly three-quarters (70%) think they may only have some of the skills needed to succeed in the working world of tomorrow. While over half (52%) aspire to earn high salaries and be wealthy, only two-thirds who seek to attain senior levels in their careers are confident about their ability to reach this goal. While many millennials don’t feel prepared when they enter the workforce, only 21% see this as a personal responsibility. About a third (30%) think that businesses/employers play the greatest role in preparing workers to succeed, and 24% say this responsibility falls … [Read more...] about Report: Employers Need to Rethink Strategies to Attract Millennials

Study: Strong Link Between Happiness and Productivity

By Joanne Kaldy / May 10, 2019

Money can’t buy happiness, but a few steps can help HR assess employee satisfaction and jump-start joy. In a recent study, happiness increased work productivity by 12%, while unhappy workers were 10% less productive. So how do you determine how happy your employees are? Then what can you do to increase their job-related joy? There are several proven tools to measure employee happiness, but among the most reliable are your eyes and ears, as well as those of your colleagues. When people gather in breakrooms, are they animated and laughing or are they silent or sullen and complaining? Are optional company events (such as parties or sporting events) well attended? Do team members greet each other warmly in the hallways? Do managers know their employees and take time to chat with them? You can gain real insight into how employees feel about the company and their jobs by watching and listening. One popular [Read more...] about Study: Strong Link Between Happiness and Productivity

Job Numbers Are Strong But Present Challenges for Healthcare

By Joanne Kaldy / May 8, 2019

There’s good news about the job market; but behind the positives there are some troubling realities. April marked the 103rd straight month of job gains and resulted in a 50-year low unemployment rate of 3.6%. Specifically, a Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) report observed that notable job gains occurred in professional and business services, construction, healthcare, and social assistance. However, underlying this in post-acute and long-term care facilities, hospitals, and other healthcare settings, labor costs are increasing and operating margins are shrinking. According to one report, labor costs in healthcare organizations represent about 60% of net revenues. At the same time, operating margins have gotten smaller as Medicare and Medicaid, instead of private insurance, have become primary payors for most patients. While technology has increased labor intensity, this hasn’t … [Read more...] about Job Numbers Are Strong But Present Challenges for Healthcare

Are You Following ADA Guidance on Obesity?

By Joanne Kaldy / May 1, 2019

HR leaders needs to look at how they address the safety, other needs of overweight employees. Statistics suggest that at least a small percentage of your employees are overweight or obese. Some of these individuals may qualify for Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) protections if their weight and related symptoms/problems “substantially limit a major life activity.” You need to know who qualifies for what protections and be prepared to provide these accordingly. Otherwise, you could leave your organization open to discrimination complaints. If an employee is obese and has associated problems—such as joint pain, mobility difficulties, shortness of breath, and/or diabetes, you need to implement a process to determine what accommodations may be needed or possible. Note that the underlying problems may be considered disabilities in their own right, regardless of weight issues; and the ADA considers those workers “regarded as disabled,” even if they don’t meet other criteria. … [Read more...] about Are You Following ADA Guidance on Obesity?
