(8/1) Rethinking Language That Works at Work

Virtual meetings and remote has influenced a new casualness even as employees return to the workplace. Here’s how to keep the words of the workspace business-like, inclusive, and appropriate:

  • Beware of cultural sensitivities. Avoid words with implicit bias or obvious racist or sexist connotations such as tribe, blackball, blacklist, girls, white-glove service, etc. Avoid culturally insensitive messaging and use words that lift people up instead of putting them.
  • Focus on preferences and inclusivity. For instance, use ‘spouse’ or ‘partner’ instead of ‘husband’ or ‘wife.’
  • Avoid words related to antiquated stereotypes such as bossy, crazy, poor, and stupid.
