Some alarming new statistics from the RAND Corporation suggest that stricter hiring practices may be in order to protect your residents and staff alike:
- Men age 30-38 who were unemployed in 2017 had significant involvement with the criminal justice system.
- This interaction included convictions, incarcerations, and/or arrests (excluding traffic-related offenses).
- Most unemployed men have been arrested at least once. About 40% had been convicted at least once and about 20% have been incarcerated at least one. These rates were consistent with those for discouraged workers or men who were working fewer hours than they wanted.
- With 1 in 3 adults having a criminal record, the connection between unemployment and criminal history is an issue for talent professionals.
This suggests that HR professionals and other organizational leaders should focus more on this issue.
