Liar, Liar: Job Hunters Tell White Lies and Whoppers on Their Resumes

By Joanne Kaldy / January 20, 2020

Lying on a resume may be more common than you think. Taking the time to vet job candidates carefully can save trouble or even disaster down the road.

According to a recent study, 36% of people admit to fibbing or fudging a bit on their resume, and 93% say they know someone else who has. HR and other leaders need to know how to look beyond resumes and detect lies before they hire an unqualified worker.

Keep Commuting Conundrums from Causing Turnover Traffic

By Joanne Kaldy / January 17, 2020

Take steps to keep your employees from getting the commuter blues. Win their appreciation and loyalty in the process.

Your employees spend an average 52 minutes on their daily commute to and from work. Sitting in traffic, dealing with a flat tire, or waiting for the bus or train, your employees may be dreaming of an easier commute. You can’t move your employees closer to your company or magically make traffic disappear, but there are many steps you can take to make commuting easier and less expensive. Your efforts also can increase worker loyalty and reduce turnover.

Make Training/Educational Software Hard for Workers to Resist

By Joanne Kaldy / January 16, 2020

You need to customize, personalize, rethink, reorganize, analyze, plan ahead, and followup to make the most of computer-based training.

You just downloaded some great educational software for staff training. You’re excited at first; then over weeks and months, you discover that it hasn’t had any impact or influence; and some departments aren’t even using it. What went wrong? The truth is that you can’t just distribute training materials—however good they are—to your employees and expect them to automatically embrace them. Learning is dynamic and very personal. For educational software to resonate with your teams, HR and other team leaders need to take some steps to customize high-tech learning.

New Legislation Will Expand Protections for Part-Time Workers

By Joanne Kaldy / January 15, 2020

Bill sponsors hope that by giving part-time workers access to more hours and benefits, they will have less need for multiple jobs to make ends meet.

If you have employees who work fewer than 30-40 hours per week, you need to know about the Part-Time Worker Bill of Rights Act, which was introduced late last year to provide additional protections for these individuals. Among other things, it addresses work schedules that do not provide as many hours as these individuals need to support their families.

Flirting, Clothing Obsession, Relationship Questions: No, It’s Not Happy Hour; It’s a Job Interview

By Joanne Kaldy / January 14, 2020

Survey results offer some shocking insights into what job seekers say about how they prepare for interviews and how hiring managers act.

You might be surprised what happens during job interviews, according to a new survey. Some eye-opening responses suggest that you may need to rethink how you conduct interviews and train others involved in hiring.

Of nearly 2,000 workers surveyed, 88% say they believe their appearance can influence how others perceive their competence, and 63% think they’ve benefited from their appearance in an interview. Over half (54%) say they worry that some aspect of their appearance could cost them a job offer; so it’s not surprising that respondents say they spend over an hour thinking about and/or shopping for an outfit to wear to an interview.

Workplace Age Discrimination Comes Under New Scrutiny

By Joanne Kaldy / January 13, 2020

It may seem like old news, but age discrimination is making headlines again. An ageism checkup now could prevent troubles down the road.

Get ready. The U.S. House of Representatives is planning to vote on a bill that would reduce barriers for workers to prove age-based job discrimination. The Protecting Older Workers Against Discrimination Act (H.R. 1230) would amend the Age Discrimination Employment Act (ADEA) to allow complaining individuals to use any type of evidence in presenting their claims. It also would clarify that complainants aren’t required to prove that a protected activity was the only cause of unlawful actions by an employer.

Sure, You Want Applicants to Be Creative, But Are Cartoons a Bridge Too Far?

By Joanne Kaldy / January 10, 2020

Hiring managers are impressed when job seekers use technology creatively. However, there are some deal breakers that turn off employers.

According to a new survey, nearly half of hiring managers say they are impressed by job candidates who connect with them via social media. They also like applicants who promote themselves through online portfolios or personal websites. However, managers are more likely to avoid candidates who use Bitmojis (expressive cartoon avatars), caricatures, and colorful fonts or backgrounds on applications. They also are turned off by individuals who “overshare” on websites or social medial posts.

Introverts: They Fly Under the Radar, But You Can Make Them Soar

By Joanne Kaldy / January 8, 2020

When you’re seeking team members to nurture, mentor, and promote, overlooking introverts can cost you some promising leaders.

While more people are introverted than extroverted, introverts represent only 39% of top executives and senior leaders in the U.S. This trend is even more pronounced in other countries. For instance, only 28% of UK leaders are introverts; and 9 out of 10 workers there say they feel pressure to act more extroverted. However, just because someone is introverted doesn’t mean that person can’t be a great leader or, at least, a leading team player.

Move Promising Job Candidates from Passive to Active

By Joanne Kaldy / January 7, 2020

Low unemployment, ghosting, and other issues will haunt your efforts to recruit workers in 2020. Fill openings with the right people by targeting passive job seekers.

Despites talk about a recession and slowing job growth, unemployment remains low. As a result, it may take longer to fill vacancies, especially those for highly skilled positions. One way to overcome this obstacle is to become more adept at identifying and reaching passive job candidates.
