(5/17) The Best HR Managers Have These Things in Common

By Joanne Kaldy / May 17, 2019

Do you have the right stuff? Experts suggest that the best HR managers share some common characteristics and skills. For one, they function as connectors in their teams, providing targeted feedback as necessary and ensuring information gets to the right players. They realize that they aren’t always the best source for coaching and feedback, and they can identify and engage those who are. Top HR managers don’t marginalize team members by stereotyping, making gender-based judgments, or generalizing based on age or other personal characteristics. These professionals use innovative hiring techniques, such as customized skills assessments. The best HR managers also are disruptors, constantly challenging traditional ideas and norms about employee development. Monitoring Technology and Data: Pump Up Productivity While Protecting Privacy

By Joanne Kaldy / May 17, 2019

Companies are looking beyond surveys to high-tech tools to assess employee attitudes. Increasingly, companies are collecting data about what employees do and say. According to one recent survey, 22% of organizations worldwide use employee-movement data, 17% monitor work-computer-usage data, and 16% use calendar-usage data. While employers say this monitoring technology enables them to improve productivity and engagement, employees often resent what they see as an invasion of their privacy. HR can play a key role in ensuring that monitoring is done appropriately and that employees understand what is being done and why. Historically, companies have used formal, large-scale employee surveys to assess how employees feel about their jobs and the workplace. However, these are generally time- and labor-intensive and offer limited—and not always completely candid—insights. Data collected from monitoring technology can provide more specific insights about how employees feel about their … [Read more...] about Monitoring Technology and Data: Pump Up Productivity While Protecting Privacy

(5/16) Spooky Situations: What To Do If You’re Being Ghosted (or Ghosting Others) at Work

By Joanne Kaldy / May 16, 2019

At some point or another, pretty much everyone ghosts or is ghosted at work. But the trend toward clients, colleagues, and others ghosting each other is growing. Instead of excusing someone’s behavior or blaming yourself for the ghosting, consider if there is another way to reach the person. If you’ve been using social media, consider a phone call or email. Take a break from the outreach; try back in a month or so. If you really need to connect with that department or organization, try a different contact there. Often, another person can help move your request along or get you the information you need. At the same time, if you are the one doing to the ghosting, remember what it’s like when the shoe is on the other foot. Take a deep breath and respond. Whatever your reason for ghosting, apologize for the delayed response and answer their question or request as honestly as you can. This is an important way to salvage relationships and gain a reputation as someone who is reliable and … [Read more...] about (5/16) Spooky Situations: What To Do If You’re Being Ghosted (or Ghosting Others) at Work

Sweeping Legislative Changes Could Soon Affect You

By Joanne Kaldy / May 16, 2019

From staffing and sexual harassment to contract employees and discrimination reporting, statehouses and courts are moving forward on hot issues. It is important to keep your finger on the pulse of legislative action, both on the national and state levels.  Currently, there is some action in Washington, D.C., and in some state capitals worth keeping on your radar. While these issues might not affect your organization directly right now, they are gaining traction across states and industries; and they could soon impact how you do business. Of greatest interest and significance on the state front is a Connecticut bill that just passed the Senate there. This legislation (Senate Bill 375) would mandate nursing homes to disclose daily the number of direct-care staff members that are assigned to patients. This measure is aimed at increasing transparency and encouraging facilities to hire more direct care staff. The bill passed 31-4, and now heads to the House. If this measure becomes law, … [Read more...] about Sweeping Legislative Changes Could Soon Affect You

(5/13) Home Care Industry Turnover Reaches All-Time High of 82%

By Joanne Kaldy / May 13, 2019

Caregiver turnover rates in home care rose to a record 82% in 2018, according to the most recent Home Care Benchmarking Study. This is a 15% over previous years. The study involved nearly 700 home care providers nationwide, representing more than $1.6 billion in annual revenues. The high turnover rate lead many of them to turn away new clients because they lack enough caregivers. The most common reasons cited for turnover included the pursuit or availability of different (better) work hours, better management, and new clients. Money also plays a key role in home health caregiver turnover. To lower turnover rates, companies are using innovations such as specialized training programs that include a career ladder, better onboarding processes, and broader training opportunities related to Alzheimer’s disease and other issues.
