(6/17) PHI Helps Design “Transition Specialist” Program

By Joanne Kaldy / June 17, 2019

Effective care transitions can mean the difference between successful recovery from an illness or surgery and a patient who bounces back the hospital or rehab center because of a problem or acute condition change. To improve care transitions, PHI International, working with Trinity Health Senior Communities, has developed an advanced Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) role called a “Transition Specialist” to provide continuity and assurance as a patient moves through the care continuum. The goal of these interventions will be to reduce hospital readmissions, improve patient satisfaction, and enable a safe move home after rehab and recover. Training for these specialists include topics related to chronic diseases such as diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and congestive heart failure. (6/14) 5 Strategies to Motivate Burned-Out Workers

By Joanne Kaldy / June 14, 2019

Sometimes even the best of workers feels burned out. You can help them recharge, but it takes more than a long-weekend or a spa day. Consider some steps to help employees go from burned-out to shining brightly: 1.       Create a career development pipeline to help workers, especially front-line staff such as nursing assistants and housekeeping staff, move up the ladder and increase income. 2.      Develop a high-potential program to recognize and reward high performers for their achievements, while helping them build stronger resumes. 3.      Create an active employee recognition program. Consider an “Employee Spotlight” to honor outstanding employees and efforts on a regular basis. Promote the program, and keep it front and center. 4.      Help employees fulfill personal career goals. Provide coaching, mentoring, and networking opportunities for staff to gain advice and guidance from leaders—over lunch meetings or regular meet-and-greets. 5.      Plan ahead. (6/13) Celebrate Father’s Day at Work

By Joanne Kaldy / June 13, 2019

Just because many dads have to work on Sunday doesn’t mean they can’t celebrate Father’s Day; and you can help. Consider some small steps you can take that will bring a big smile to the faces of working dads. For instance, give working fathers in your organization picture frames they can use to display family photos. Host a lunch or dinner where families can come in for 30 or 45 minutes to spend time with dad. Have a photographer onsite to take photos. Create a team-building activity where staff create gift bags for the young children of dads in your organization; these might include coloring books, crayons, bubbles, kites, and stickers. (6/12) Workers Say Employers Need to Improve Development Efforts

By Joanne Kaldy / June 12, 2019

Employees want career development opportunities so much that they are willing to leave their current employer to get them. In a recent survey, 92% of respondents said that access to professional development is important or very important, second only to compensation; however, only 78% said they actually enjoy this benefit in their current position.  At the same time, employees who have access to career development are 15% more likely to say they’re engaged at work. Three-quarters of employees who have access to career development said they plan to stay at their jobs for five years, compared to only half of those employees without this benefit. If your company doesn’t offer career development, it is worth looking into…now. Otherwise, the survey authors said, you can expect to replace up to 85% of unengaged employees over the next five years; and the savings from lower turnover are very likely to outweigh any investment in career development benefits. (6/11) Study: Employers Still Fail to Prioritize Candidates with Disabilities in Talent Strategies

By Joanne Kaldy / June 11, 2019

A new survey suggests that employers still aren’t reaching out to and connecting with the 20 million people with disabilities who are seeking work. Most respondents (98%) said they publicly promote diversity, but only 76% said they specifically promote diversity for people with disabilities. When hiring on college campuses, only about half said they focus on recruiting students with disabilities. Hiring experts suggest five steps for improving connections with people who have disabilities: prioritize accessibility, rethink how jobs might be done differently by someone with a disability, represent all employees in marketing campaigns, encourage people with disabilities to share their experiences, and create a culture of learning for both employees with disabilities and their supervisors. (6/10) Putting Humanity into HR Compliance: Become Aware of Unconscious Bias

By Joanne Kaldy / June 10, 2019

Sneaking into your job listings, policies, and even your conversations, unconscious bias can cause headaches and hurt for you, your employees, and/or your company. What is this? Unconscious bias involves situations where someone makes assumptions about another person based on how that individual looks, speaks, or behaves. The perpetrator of the bias isn’t aware that he or she is making inappropriate assumptions, statements, or actions. So what can you do about it? The first step is to become conscious of the bias. Encourage employees to put themselves in others’ shoes and understand how hurtful and counterproductive stereotypes and misconceptions are. Make sure supervisors and managers are up to the task of modeling unbiased actions and decision-making. Invest in diversity, equity, and inclusion training. Consider working with an outside consultant to evaluate your organization and suggest focuses for training and education. Realize that it may be impossible to completely … [Read more...] about (6/10) Putting Humanity into HR Compliance: Become Aware of Unconscious Bias

(6/7) Employers Don’t Feel Equipped to Support Mental Health Conditions

By Joanne Kaldy / June 7, 2019

According to new research, only 29% of employers feel “very confident” in accommodating employees’ mental health conditions, and a similar number (28%) have that level of confidence when it comes to accommodating drug addicted workers. Employers also identified top challenges they face in accommodating mental health issues: beliefs/concerns that employees hide their condition, a lack of knowledge to recognize mental health conditions, and prejudices against people with mental health problems. More encouraging, many employers are incorporating behavioral health programs into the company culture to help break down stigmas and encourage employees to seek the help they need. Offering no or little mental health support is a lose-lose proposition, costing employers in terms of turnover, poor work performance, and other issues. Accommodations that help boost employees’ overall health and productivity are likely to save both time and money in the long run. Fears and confusion about complying with the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has caused some HR leaders to throw up their hands and outsource leave management. But understanding some common mistakes can enable HR to confidently address leave management without outside help. By Joanne Kaldy / June 5, 2019

Engaged employees often cite a positive mentorship experience as one key reason they are happy with their job and their company.
