Pending Caregiver Shortage: Worse Than Expected?

By Joanne Kaldy / January 31, 2019

The caregiver shortage crisis could actually be more severe than previously thought, presenting challenges—but also opportunities—for employers. Based on projections from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), a new report from the Paraprofessional Healthcare Institute (PHI) suggests that the direct care workforce will likely grow by 1.4 million jobs from 2016 to 2026. This is more than registered nurses and fast food workers combined, the second and third highest growth fields. … [Read more...] about Pending Caregiver Shortage: Worse Than Expected?

(1/30) How To Reduce Regrettable Turnover with 4 Simple Tactics

By Joanne Kaldy / January 30, 2019

While not all turnover is bad, you don’t want to lose good employees, those who do quality work and seem to fit in with the organizational culture. Consider a few ways to reduce these “regrettable” turnovers. For starters, realize that people often quit their jobs because of their bosses. Make sure managers understand the importance of recognizing employees and expressing appreciation for them on a regular basis. Infuse transparency into recruiting; make the company culture clear to job candidates from the start. Many younger employees don’t just appreciate this; they expect it. Elsewhere, define milestones with actionable, achievable, and measurable goals; and encourage managers to embrace a coaching role to build lasting relationships with their employees. HR Issues Head to the Hill in New Congress

By Joanne Kaldy / January 30, 2019

Now that the government shutdown has ended, Congress is settling in and getting down to business. Watch for action on a number of issues affecting HR. While not all issues or proposed bills will go anywhere, paid leave has the best chance of being signed into law. This issue has some broad bipartisan support; and the president has even spoken out favorably about the concept of paid family leave and paid sick leave. Most likely, the issue will be addressed with an expansion of leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act. However, some Republicans have expressed support for a voluntary paid-sick-leave program or one where employees shoulder the cost through a reduction in Social Security or other benefits. However, these ideas have not been well-received by Democrats. … [Read more...] about HR Issues Head to the Hill in New Congress

(1/29) Free Snacks Won’t Retain Workers Long Term. Here’s What Will

By Joanne Kaldy / January 29, 2019

Want to keep the best and brightest? Free snacks and beverages might be nice (32% of employees offer them), but the key word today is flexibility. Workers, particularly millennials, want flexible hours and schedules, the ability to juggle work and family, and the option to sometimes work offsite (when possible). Other attractive benefits include unlimited paid time off (PTO); 5% of employers offered this in 2018. Whatever benefits you implement, experts say, you need to think beyond free food or a coffee bar. Read the full article. … [Read more...] about (1/29) Free Snacks Won’t Retain Workers Long Term. Take Training Up a Notch to Increase Worker Competence, Confidence

By Joanne Kaldy / January 29, 2019

A new survey shows that many workers don’t feel qualified for their jobs and hesitate to ask for help. According to a recent survey, one-third of the workforce doesn’t feel qualified for their jobs, and over half say they have a colleague who they think is unqualified for his or her position. At the same time, many hesitate to ask for help; and one in three say they turn to Google or YouTube instead of a supervisor or coworker. … [Read more...] about Take Training Up a Notch to Increase Worker Competence, Confidence

(1/28) Four Key Tips for Workers When Confronted by Workplace Violence

By Joanne Kaldy / January 28, 2019

Part of your workplace violence plan should address strategies for workers to protect themselves. First, enable and encourage them to recognize violent behaviors and signs in others, including angry outbursts, talk about weapons, intimidating behavior, and holding grudges. Teach employers to take precautions and not to shrug off or ignore any concerns they have about a coworker. Train staff to avoid confrontations by remaining calm, not arguing, not responding to threats, and avoiding situations or places (when possible) where they might encounter a problem. Finally, it is essential that employees report any workplace violence, threats, or concerns immediately. Have a policy and procedure in place designed to protect workers and let them know that their safety is a top priority. By Joanne Kaldy / January 24, 2019

Setting your teams up for success is key for HR as the new year gets underway. Your 2019 agenda should be focused on this, as well as on navigating (and minimizing) volatility and driving growth. Culture is more important than ever, so plan to promote and preserve an agile culture of innovation; and make the formation of high-performing teams a science pursued at all levels.
