(10/7): ‘Just Text Me’: New Way to Interview

By Joanne Kaldy / October 7, 2019

Texting isn’t just for teens and kids anymore. It’s moving into the hiring arena, and more employers are using it to connect with job candidates, especially millennials and Gen Zers. Some tips for successful text hiring include:

  • Consider the position. Limit texting to more junior positions.
  • Talk, then text. Speak to candidates via phone first, then get their permission to text. The phone conversation is important to establishing a personal connection.
  • Have a text message policy. This should detail how and when to start contact via text. For instance, state that all texts must be professional – no slang or abbreviations.
  • Save texts. Keep these as you would any records or written communications. This will protect the company if there is a complaint or question later on.

Diversity and inclusion are essential to business success. Yet, many organizations are still struggling with how to implement these concepts into their strategic plans. Experts suggest a few keys to help:

  • Have a clearly defined purpose for meetings that drive inclusiveness and diversity. Encourage leaders to promote discussions that give everyone an opportunity to contribute ideas and be involved in problem-solving.
  • Take the bias out of requests for flexibility. Make flexible scheduling available, as possible, to employees at all levels. Ensure that employees aren’t judged or penalized for requesting flexibility.

By Joanne Kaldy / September 26, 2019

If you’ve waited to plan for federal overtime regulation changes, don’t panic. Experts suggest a few tips:

  • Prepare to pay newly eligible workers overtime; or give them a raise to put them over the new $35,568 annual threshold.
  • Conduct self-audits to see if any employees are incorrectly classified as exempt or non-exempt.
  • Remember that new overtime exemptions apply only to white-collar professions in various positions, including executive, administrative, and professional workers.
